Information to Keep in Mind

The first thing to keep in mind is that the same 4 C’s you paid attention to when buying your diamond are also looked at when we buy your diamond. These factors are Color (how white the diamond is), Clarity (the amount of imperfections or flaws inside the diamond), Cut & proportion (these determine how the light refracts in the diamond making it either more brilliant or more dull), and the Carat weight (how large the diamond is in size). More detailed information on the 4 C’s is available on our Diamond Information page. Do you have a diamond certificate or appraisal? That’s also important when determining the value of your diamond. What’s the difference?

Certificate vs. Appraisal

People often don’t know the difference between a diamond certificate and a diamond appraisal. Certificates, also called diamond grading reports, are made by a team of gemologists from a reputable Gemological Laboratory likeGIA (Gemological Institute of America). Certificates include all of the important information about a diamond, including cut, color, clarity, and carat weight. Certificates are also only issued for loose diamonds, not mounted ones, and never include a price. Appraisals, on the other hand, can be done on mounted or loose diamonds and give the item being appraised a dollar value. Appraisals are usually used for insurance purposes.

What We Buy

At Gray & Sons, we look for quality diamonds and diamond jewelry. We’ll be glad to offer a preliminary quote on diamonds of any cut, color, or clarity, loose diamonds or mounted diamonds. We buy pre-owned diamond jewelry, unused diamond jewelry, antique or vintage diamond jewelry, and signed diamond jewelry from names like Cartier, Tiffany, Van Cleef and Arpels, etc…
